Witch Doctor leveling build for Season 4 of Diablo 3
A level 70 “next step” build is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCOSyWAB0O4
It’s that time of the year again. Diablo 3 has received a significant update with patch 2.3 and we have rotated into Season 4. This video explains (first 10 minutes) and then shows (last 10 minutes) you how you could level up your Witch Doctor in a fun and safe way on Hardcore.
This is a build to level up your character, as such you can start playing it early. At level 12 you unlock Haunt, the core skill. At level 23 you unlock the last few core runes of the build. Between these two levels you can transition from your early game “use whatever skills I get” build to this build. All you need is a blue or yellow two-handed weapon; no special sets or legendaries required.
The core skill of this build is Haunt, which does insande damage when used with a two-handed weapon. Because this is so efficient for doing damage, it’s all you need while leveling up. At level 17 you unlock Spirit Barrage, but you only use that for boss fights, after you have applied Haunt and don’t want to stand around twiddling your thumbs.
All other skills in this build are there to help you stay alive. Grasping Dead slows down enemies before they can get to you, and does very nice damage over time. Zombie Dogs with the Chilled to the Bone rune help to slow enemies down and increase the damage they take from Haunt. Gargantuan with the Humongoid rune is yet another body that distracts enemies, and it does nice area damage. Spirit Walk with the Jaunt rune is there to get you out of trouble, such as when you are surrounded by mobs, walled in, or frozen solid. It’s also useful to walk faster across long distances (dead-end corridors).
The passive skills are also geared towards survivability. Pick up Jungle Fortitude first; 15% damage resistance is very nice for survivability. At level 20 grab anything, I went with Blood Magic for the life regen. At level 24 you switch the second passive to Zombie Handler. 1 exta dog AND 20% extra health for you and your minions? Hell yeah! At level 30 grab Fetish Sycophants. Up to 15 disposable distractions to make monsters not attack you is very nice to have. Higher-level passives that can be interesting to rotate in are: Fierce Loyalty (extra dog & faster movement speed), Midnight Feats (extra dog & 50% pet damage boost), and Creeping Death (which in the video I mis-attribute to an item set bonus).
Gearing is pretty straightforward: equip the two-handed weapon that does most damage. Preferrably this is a slow two-hander that does as much damage per hit as possible. All armor sockets carry Diamonds for resist all. Weapon gets a Ruby for extra damage. Helmet gets either a Amethyst (life) or a Ruby (experience), depending on how comfortable you are with your defenses. Stats to look out for: intelligence, vitality, life per second, bonus damage to skills you use, life per hit, extra life percentage, crit chance, crit damage. Boots get movement speed, of course. Don’t forget to upgrade your gear to crafted rares or legendaries when they start to lag 5-10 levels behind you.
If you just created a new character, don’t forget to “borrow” the weapon from a follower that you are not playing with. I used my Enchantress, so I borrowed my Templar’s sword and shield at the beginning of the game. Follower weapons have 7.5 DPS, while you start with a 3.0 DPS weapon, so this is a big boost early on. Run through the earliest parts of Act 1 on Normal difficulty to get gear and levels. Once you hit level 12 to unlock Haunt, and have at least blue and yellow gear in all your slots, re-create the game on Hard difficulty and start running bounties in the act that has the double reward bonus. Clear all 5 bounties, collect the reward, then run a Rift for variation, XP and gear. Then move to the act that now has the double reward bonus. Repeat until you have cleared all 5 acts. This will take 4-5 hours solo and should get you safely past level 40. At this point you will have a number of legendaries, a number of craftable sets and legendaries and a decent stack of gold and crafting materials. Have fun!
